Wales strikes GOLD & BRONZE in Delhi Commonwealth Games.
As bowlers in Wales watched the recent Commonwealth Games in Delhi they must have viewed the bowls competition with increasing interest, as the Welsh Bowls team fought through to the late medal stages, and on to outstanding success.
Twenty four years after winning a Gold Medal in the Fours competition in Edinburgh, Wales’s Robert Weale won his second Commonwealth Games Gold Medal when he added the much cherished singles title to his impressive collection of titles and Commonwealth Medals.
Having won the singles Bronze Medal in Manchester 2002, and the singles Silver Medal in Melbourne 2006 (where he lost a close, nail-biting match) it seemed well fitting that Robert at last gained his just reward in winning the Gold Medal as Men’s Singles Champion in Delhi.
Not only is his victory testament to his outstanding ability, but also to his perseverance, something all champions seem to have.
Many congratulations Robert, and every success for the future.
Backing up Robert’s outstanding gold medal was the well earned Bronze Medal of Hannah Smith and Anwen Button in the Women’s Pairs competition.
They lost a close match to Malaysia for the chance to play off for the gold medal, but then showed great character, by going on to pull off an excellent win over Australia in the Bronze Medal play-off game, decisively winning the tie-break.
The Bronze Medal gained by Hannah and Anwen in Delhi now adds to a growing collection of international honours achieved by this talented pair, and augurs well for the future.
Congratulations ladies and we look forward to toasting your future successes.
While not gaining more medal success, the team as a whole put up other notable performances with the Men’s Triples of Chris Blake, Andrew Fleming and Mark Wyatt gaining a most creditable fourth place, having lost the Bronze Medal play-off game to England.
Not to be outdone, the ladies then gained another notable placing when Carol Difford came fifth in the singles competition. Having lost to the gold medal winner in the first play-off match, it can be seen how close Carol also was to medal success in her first major championships.
